3 AM thoughts

I once knew a girl who grew up in Ohio but whose family was from the South

She had just the slightest Southern accent; it was noticeable mostly when she was emotional

And now I wonder if that mostly-Midwestern-but-sometimes-Southern accent is what people from other countries hear when they imagine an "American accent"

    I wonder how noticeable my Southern accent is.  I notice it more on myself now that I'm in Los Angeles than when I was back in NC.

    Somewhat related to -calica's comment above, but I find the differences between my spoken word and written text to be very interesting. Apply that further to everyone else, and it's something I think about sporadically, although I'm not sure why beyond "it's interesting." I'm not even well-versed enough in linguistics to pinpoint this sort of stuff, never mind that I'm pretty tired. Then there's also the fact that linguistics has been on my mind for the past week at least, although my searches and whatnot have mostly gone nowhere, unfortunately. Linguistics, another one of my interests I wish I knew more about. Even before I focus on those, however, there are other things weighing on my mind.

    it's most noticeable when you say y'all, but because your parents both have southern academic accents it's less than it would be otherwise, I think?

    Probably.  Also that when I was at UNC there were a lot of people from the mountains who had more noticeable accents than people from the Triangle in general, since the Triangle was a popular destination for people from other parts of the US.
