also if anyone was curious about this past week's rap releases all u need to know is that the Bronson album was mediocre as fuck and the Earl album is great but people hate it because idk
After talking it over with Section, I think I've sorted out my thoughts on Sufjan's album Carrie & Lowell. Musically, it's the bookends from The Age of Adz (namely "Futile Devices" and the final section of "Impossible Soul") expanded to album length. Acoustic guitar and banjo dominate, but it's not a complete return to the folk of Seven Swans: there's an electronic sheen over all the sounds, Suf's vocals are all double-tracked, and several songs end with ambient washes of synths and electric guitar without any warning.
These are some of the sweetest, easy-listening-est tunes of Sufjan's whole career—so naturally they're paired with his most baffling (and occasionally off-putting) lyrics yet. The verse that stood out to me the most: "There's blood on this blade / fuck me I'm falling apart / my assassin, like Casper the Ghost / there's no shade in the shadow of the cross." Apparently, this is Sufjan unfiltered, even more stream-of-consciousness than usual. And this is an album about death and grief, so the disorientation is fitting, I think.
Today I was at the library and found, in their basement (where they have used books, CDs, and movies for sale), a very amateur-looking album pressed by someone named Arlen Oleson.
It was only fifty cents, so I picked it up. Turns out dude is a dulcimerist (that's a real thing) best known for protesting the quiet zone laws in New York parks.
the album itself is basically new age. Great sampling material, for one thing.
The album is so amateur that there's not actually a graphic on the disc it's printed on, it's pressed on a Hewlett-Packard brand blank disc. Also the second track is called "Fedora".
Really? I always thought Glass was rather gimmicky--great on occasion, but well below the other Minimalists (such as Adams, my favorite living classical composer) generally
Unmanly statement of the night: I am actually a huge Maroon 5 fan.
I own virtually all of their albums (except Overexposed, which was horrible pop trash) and listen to them on repeat very often. I also think Adam Levine is moderately attractive, although his personality leaves very much to be desired.

i think
laptop speakers are not good for evaluating music
i kinda wish that it coalesced at some point though, it needed a track somewhere towards the back of the middle that went into full on banger mode
that's a minor complaint though
Also: the CD as a physical object with the packaging is really nice, well thought out
my dad is from there yntkt
i am legitimately moderately confused by this
* Tripper
* Levon Vincent's self titled
* Thievery Corporation - The Richest Man In Babylon
* Leviathan - Scar Sighted

What I was calling him "awesome" for had nothing to do with the quality of his music.
