There are a few people who can do self-indulgence well, fewer who can do it very well, but the problem is that most jam bands seriously lack the imagination, versatility and sense of adventure to make their self-indulgence fun rather than plodding. It's like switching out Can in their prime with a mediocre bar band.
fleetwood mac has looped round and has become so uncool to like that now it is cool to like them
That is a pretty good summation of the situation, although I would argue that a lot of their less embarrassing material was uncool in a way that made it OK to like it without having any actual cache. It's sort of like enjoying Todd Rundgren's early work or something: Not worthy of an eye-roll but not actually hip either.
Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
The Beards sing exclusively about beards and they do this pastiche of other musical styles that I think they do really well also the production is pretty clean.
I just watched the video for "Anaconda" and I think that I can safely say that Nicky Minaj does not even care any more and there's something brilliant about that even if the song gets kind of boring by the end. Like, it's not just lazy and dumb, it takes lazy and dumb to the next level. Only someone really smart and capable could write something so ludicrous and vapid.
Also, Drake just looks confused and vaguely traumatised in the video and there is something very funny about that.
y'all should watch the bbc4 documentary 'synth britannia'
it didn't introduce me to new bands particularly but was excellent at building a unified narrative of that British early 80s synth-driven post punk sound
I remember reading in Rip It Up And Start Again how Gary Numan started out as this electronics-phobic glam-punk but when his band was recording their first album he started playing around with one of the studio's monosynths and he was just blown away at how massive and strange it sounded. So he became a convert and started writing songs for rock ensemble and synthesisers and all was right with the universe because "Down In The Park".
my favourite 'band discovers synth in studio' story was joy division, who were so amazed to find that the synth in their studio could play more than one note at once that they wrote 'Atmosphere' on it right then and there
There is a certain pleasant irony to that, given that they pulled the raw mixes for their first album back in '78 because their label had thrown (some occasionally rather interesting) analogue synth sounds all over it without their permission.

plus souncloud embeds are much nicer to loadtimes in my experience
new afux twun is incredible
new deafheaven is very nice, Clarke hits some nice lows, the riffs are lush, and there is a dope guitar solo
plus it's very dynamic with fluid transitions between segments and it is just about the perfect length for the ideas presented
gonna have to give it a few more listens but it might be my most fave thing from them ever
old punk musicians continue to be the most pathetic sort of old person
