I am listening to a podcast consisting of one guy trying to convince another guy to like Phish
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I don't resent Phish as much as I resent the many, many bands that want to be either them or the Dead.

Seriously, improvisation is a place of exploration, not an excuse to indulge yourself on stage.

I liked one song they did that sounded like a funkier version of Yes, going off what's been played on the show.

I'm mostly 5-7 out of 10 on them though.

Frank Zappa's the only person who's ever made indulging yourself on stage look like fun, probably because he did it first.

There are a few people who can do self-indulgence well, fewer who can do it very well, but the problem is that most jam bands seriously lack the imagination, versatility and sense of adventure to make their self-indulgence fun rather than plodding. It's like switching out Can in their prime with a mediocre bar band.
  • For once, or maybe twice, I was in my prime.
The only Phish song I know is "Rift", and that's just because Hot Club of Detroit covered it.
  • annoying consequence of metalcore/deathcore: non -core metal bands going out of their way not to use breakdowns even when they're called for.

  • truly a world leading electronic fartist. can't wait for Syria

  • new deafheaven is very nice, Clarke hits some nice lows, the riffs are lush, and there is a dope guitar solo

plus it's very dynamic with fluid transitions between segments and it is just about the perfect length for the ideas presented

gonna have to give it a few more listens but it might be my most fave thing from them ever

Listening to Airs covering Spacemen 3. Enjoying myself.

I like remembering that Airs exist.

At least the article writer's response was positive.

    But yes, the :/ intensifies.

Bon Jovi, Disturbed, Fleetwood Mac, and The Eagles are all bands I feel like I'm supposed to dislike.

    I don't though.

    I don't though.
I quite dislike both Bon Jovi and Disturbed.

I actually quite like Rumours, for some reason. I also think Tusk is somewhat underrated.

I like some Eagles songs, although I don't think I could sit through an entire album of theirs.
  • fleetwood mac has looped round and has become so uncool to like that now it is cool to like them
  • disturbed suck but David draiman on twitter is beautiful

That is a pretty good summation of the situation, although I would argue that a lot of their less embarrassing material was uncool in a way that made it OK to like it without having any actual cache. It's sort of like enjoying Todd Rundgren's early work or something: Not worthy of an eye-roll but not actually hip either.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
The Beards sing exclusively about beards and they do this pastiche of other musical styles that I think they do really well also the production is pretty clean.

man, not even concerning with the questionable choice of some of the examples and separation of genres (and the mangling of the word psychedelic)

why don't people design a periodic table parody that's like, actually periodic

the table of the elements is ordered like that for a reason, and a periodic table of other things will not look like so at all

im not even gonna maximize that because i don't need the cringe

That was exactly what I was thinking.

I mean, shouldn't the offspring of thrash metal and blues/gospel at least get their own column?
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I just watched the video for "Anaconda" and I think that I can safely say that Nicky Minaj does not even care any more and there's something brilliant about that even if the song gets kind of boring by the end. Like, it's not just lazy and dumb, it takes lazy and dumb to the next level. Only someone really smart and capable could write something so ludicrous and vapid.

Also, Drake just looks confused and vaguely traumatised in the video and there is something very funny about that.

    He underwent a religious experience.

That's actually about 75% of why I like 'Anaconda'.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
OK, so this guy did a mashup album of Death Grips' Ex-Military and clipping.'s midcity, and you know what? It's actually really good.
  • y'all should watch the bbc4 documentary 'synth britannia'

it didn't introduce me to new bands particularly but was excellent at building a unified narrative of that British early 80s synth-driven post punk sound
  • also if you didn't already know, it will teach you that Gary numan is the bomb. also apparently he has aspergers
  • nah he's just there in his car, where he feels safest of all.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I remember reading in Rip It Up And Start Again how Gary Numan started out as this electronics-phobic glam-punk but when his band was recording their first album he started playing around with one of the studio's monosynths and he was just blown away at how massive and strange it sounded. So he became a convert and started writing songs for rock ensemble and synthesisers and all was right with the universe because "Down In The Park".
  • my favourite 'band discovers synth in studio' story was joy division, who were so amazed to find that the synth in their studio could play more than one note at once that they wrote 'Atmosphere' on it right then and there
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
There is a certain pleasant irony to that, given that they pulled the raw mixes for their first album back in '78 because their label had thrown (some occasionally rather interesting) analogue synth sounds all over it without their permission.
  • In other news Objekt has dropped a new track

and as per usual it blows most music that isn't Objekt out of the water
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I am listening to it and it is indeed quite excellent.
  • the A-side by Dopplereffekt is pretty swell too, if a bit self-consciously retro
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I would not mind as much!
