That is par for the course with Lacan. Much of his writing is confusing waffle, and his mathemes are pretty much the worst of the lot. Whatever meaning they have is inextricable from Lacan's own work, so why he felt the need to formalize them is something of a mystery. my guess is it was just an attempt to make his work appear more rigorous than it really is.
i may be doing him a disservice; psychoanalysis has never been my strong suit and i've never had much patience with Lacan. But that's the impression i get, anyway.
