..on Skyrim. My wife left her laptop open to the game and one of our cats decided laptops are warm and awesome.

The end result is my wife's character is out a whole bunch of money, but is richer a whole bunch of Ale and Amethyst.

Elder Scroll derail time!

No offence to the creators of the Elder Scroll series, but it seems very "D&D" to me.

Now that's not BAD per se, it's a formula that's worked since Tolkien, but trying to call your humanoids with pointy ears something besides elves does not fool anyone.

It could be. I mean, it's a little vaguer than most proverbs, but still good "general advice" under many circumstances.

Well they don't call them something else by default. Its not like they're trying to "fool anyone" Altmer are still called High Elves, Dunmer are still Dark Elves, Orismer are still Orcs and Bosmer are still Wood Elves.

I guess it's nice that they embrace their Tolkien roots.

Admittedly, it's hard to break from, and it's not like Tolkien invented any of the races out of whole cloth.
