I have no idea how the English view him. Honestly, I'm guessing V for Vendetta might have helped Fawkes a bit elsewhere.

Maybe it's just that everyone feels like blowing up their government every once in a while. Perhaps that's what people think and sort of forget that step 2 was "Get some Catholocisim ruling up ins!"

It's probably the "He wanted to blow up Parliament!" idea combined with almost no further information on the part of the people who celebrate him.

Alan Moore might have accidently made him sort of an anarchist figure in his comic, I'm sure the movie has done that even further.
