Letting the ghost pass over gems ("ghosting" them) turns them into diamonds which are worth more.

I wasn't there for the entire livestream but I believe he bought the Ankh (which costs $50,000) instead of killing the shopkeepers and just taking it. So he'd have needed the extra money.

I'm pretty sure running under the ghost such that you're overlapping a portion of the ghost's sprite was not possible in the original. Even barely touching the ghost's sprite wouldn't work.

So they probably shrank the ghost's hitbox a little.

Spelunky HD isn't a port of the original, it's a complete remake.

So I wouldn't say they shrunk it more that the hitbox is simply smaller as a matter of circumstance.
