When I lived in Palmyra, we went through Columbia a few times, and I remember thinking "Why is a quaint little town like this practically a ghost town, instead of bustling like Scottsville or Fork Union or even Palmyra itself?" It turns out that, like Centralia, PA, Columbia had been ruined by natural disasters. Part of the town is in the James River's floodplain, and catastrophic floods in the 1970s and 1980s pretty much did it in.
They've since been left with a government that can't function due to outdated rules and a lack of funds, a dwindling population, and no way to fix any of these problems except retrocession.

I installed Google Earth Pro because it's free now...and then realized I don't actually have any use for the "Pro" features.

The big things, I guess, are the movie maker and high resolution printouts...neither of which I need or really want.

...who wants to go swimming with the smell of a wastewater plant in the air?

One of those water towers is the long-lost Fort Barnard water tower in Arlington, and I've been looking for a picture of that thing for years. Turns out it's of similar design to a water tower in Cabin John, MD (also in that ad), and both designs are in the PDM "soup bowl" family I've seen in Iowa and in Seattle.
More old ad finds. It turns out the Sacramento Mothership (as I like to call it) is a Horton Spheroidal rated at 3 million gallons (one of the biggest built at the time), and has at least one known twin in Portland.

See, this is why you need an escort vehicle in front of the oversize load. One with a pole the height of your load, so if it hits anything you know not to proceed.

There's a disturbingly common misconception that "EXEMPT" beneath a railroad crossing sign means the tracks are abandoned or permanently out of service.
In reality, it just means that the likelihood of an accident involving a school bus or other vehicle getting rear-ended has been judged as greater than the likelihood of a motor vehicle being hit by a train. Which is to say, you can find exempt crossings on rail lines that are actively but infrequently used. (Such as the US 30 crossing near Wooster that's said to receive two trains a week.)

I'm pretty sure that's the largest pedestal tank ever built. It's certainly the largest I've seen.
I did some digging and found a spec sheet for this monster; by capacity, it's not the biggest (3 million gallons), but it's also got a very short head range of 25 feet, which means the tank has to be really wide.

"Offence" seems like "licence" in that it's a spelling that comes up from time to time when Americans just don't know the "right" way to spell something.
The latter is actually because the noun and the verb are distinguished by spelling basically everywhere but the US. "Offence" is odder because the verb is, generally speaking, "offend."

In internal documents and plans, ODOT has a two-letter prefix for each category of numbered highway: "SR" for state routes, "US" for US Routes, and "IR" for Interstates (the R presumably standing for "route").
