Was Bombadil ever confirmed to be one of the Ainur? I thought that was just speculation by fans. I remember that Tolkien rejected the theory that Bombadil was the avatar of Eru Ilúvatar (The equivalent to God in the Middle Earth setting).

To my recollection, Tolkien never came out and said who or what Bombadil really was.

There was a theory that I read claiming that Bombadil was a strange, eldritch evil, and that the other evils of the forest avoided him because he was scarier than they were.
