Once you get the compass, things open up more.

I won.

I noted it wasn't strictly necessary to explore every inch of the map. In fact, that was the most tedious aspect with maintaining supplies.

You could theoretically explore one place, only one place, and win. The trick is finding that place and getting enough skills and items to get to the place

I also find it oddly hilarious that your character can't do anything with two types of the same weapon, but you can give them one of each weapon in the game and they become a pointy, sharp, projectile shooting, avatar of death.

I enjoyed, or at least, didn't mind combat once I got a few weapons. That way you can attack while waiting for other weapons to be ready again.
