I think I've found HH's sister forum.

  • strikes me as more similar to IJBM than us. Though infinitely less annoying.

    Further, what is GeekNights?

  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    ^ They have an FAQ.

Seem like an OK bunch from what little I can tell. Like Mo said, more like IJBM than us in terms of conduct, but they strike me as less... uh, pretentious and bitter?
  • Hm. The whole fact that they've got a site attached makes me feel weird for some reason, almost as if we and IJBM are the odd ones out for being exclusively forums.

Ah well. I probably couldn't come up with anything for us to add on here (besides maybe a more neatly-organized blog than the Tumblr).

    huh

might be fun to join those guys
  • I signed up but am unable to comment because for some reason it won't register that I've already confirmed my e-mail.

so much for that I suppose.

actually to be honest they look like HH's bizarro world version

Most of their threads are coherent and look at their ratio of video games to music compared to ours

Oooh, I've been following GeekNights for their nice analyses of Utena episodes for a while now. Didn't know they had a forum
  • actually I take back the "but better" comparison to IJBM2. If anything it's worse. Check the DOTA2 or Scrolls thread.

why gamers are incapable of discussing anything even remotely civilly will forever remain a mystery to me.

also I kind of hate podcasts as a concept so I'm not entirely sure there'd be much a point to me joining at all.

Man, I would just like it if this place had more discussion of board games.

...Does anyone here play stuff like Settlers of Catan and Power Grid and the like?

as weird as it may sound for someone who is a rap fan, I really just cannot listen to people talk about stuff. There needs to be some kind of other element.

I think most people have the same problem I do, which is "with whom?"

Well, that actually makes sense from a rap/hip-hop perspective: The spoken word is just one instrument or element which rarely works alone from a musical perspective unless layered or varied significantly. Plus, rhythmic voice is different from simply talking.

That aside, I enjoy podcasts when I am in the mood, much like I enjoy NPR.

HH and IJBM are both offshoots of a larger community. They're basically alternate places for the people from that original community to hang out, so it makes sense that we don't have anything associated.
  • Yeah, I guess that makes sense.

This is a hangout that is almost totally dissociated from the source material of its origin and in a way that makes us all cool kids. B)

I like those image banner things they have next to their names
  • me too, i'd kinda like to get a hold of that for the "Toothy Bird" / "Princess" et al. pictures

it's nbd though, our signatures kinda act as that for us

first two things I stumbled upon were a guy telling another guy that he made him a gaming computer build for *only* $800 and another guy saying Muslims are wide-eyed lunatics.

    ._.

The only two rules are no porn and don't harass any members, so, like 4chan, it is one of those places where we see what happens when literally anything goes I guess. ^_^

    Yeah, that's kind of silly

I mean, to get a gaming rig that can play modern games at high settings it only takes about $1000, you could build a gaming rig that plays games at about medium settings for a whole lot cheaper

I am not really big on high-def graphics and all that stuff; I just like to be able to run the game properly. :)

The latter struck me as an extremely off-colour joke; I did not see the former.

the assumption that the person you're talking to just has $800 to spend freely.

I like to use the term "Tvtropes Diaspora"
  • Muslims around
my area always look super pissed or violent. That and those huge arse
pupils make them look even more psychotic. Why is that, Anyways?

Sounds like a problem to solve with the back of your hand.

Now this? This is kind of nostalgic of the TvTropes OTC. And that would be nice if OTC wasn't an evil pit that surpassed and consumed the original IJBM subforum, becoming a festering sore on the mind of humanity.

Well, OTC is less a hellhole now than a mire of self-indulgent intellectual malaise, but you are not incorrect.
  • are there more or less conservatives that are stuck up about being conservatives there now?
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Less. Major Tom got exiled from OTC; others have followed.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Yeah, the moderation has actually been doing a pretty good job keeping people like that in line lately.

Doesn't change the fact that I'll probably be leaving the site in the next few months, but it's something...
  • I have actually expressed an interest in rejoining TVTropes before but the first time I asked to have my ban lifted I was met with a flat "no" (literally) and the second time I did not receive any response at all. So, *shrug*.

It's since become a game of how many sockpuppets I can have at a time.

  • Not a hybrid rabbit-skink spirit
I'm rather glad I never actually got myself banned

i still post there from time to time, as our good friend Vashtar can attest to

I wanted to go sockpuppeting sometimes but I never did because I don't need that sort of excitement and also I do not like TV Tropes. It was mostly nostalgia for the Trash Heap.
  • well I mostly got myself banned because my attempts to leave willingly were not working so well and because I was told that I needed to cut down on stress-causers. Simplest way to get permabanned was to insult the mod team is all.

More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
It really says something about an administration on a big forum when well-liked regulars are leaving (or being banned) en masse, making the effort of establishing new forums and such to continue their usual activities, and then these forums are successful.
  • It says more about us who make the forums, really.

I still swing by the old forums to see how the old Heap and some of my old stomping grounds are going. In most cases, the old threads and I have grown too distant for me to really care about what they're on about. But I visit anyways.
  • I don't ever go on the forums anymore.

Sometimes I look on at Forum Games and Yack Fest longingly as if I want to rejoin, but I feel like I don't belong there anymore. I still visit the wiki (my biggest contribution as of late being one of the writers of the Character page for The Limbless Wonder) but that's more because I guess I enjoy the troping side of things more than the community itself nowadays.

I love it here though. I don't know if I'm leaving anytime soon, which is a very good thing.
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
What if one day, all the subforums of TV Tropes combined into a giant robot and ascended into space to take over the world with laser terrorism? :)
  • People make the HH the HH, Not the site used.

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I still poke around Writer's Block for a few reasons, and stop in other places for fewer reasons. But they are rapidly becoming scantier.

I might give the So Bad, It's Horrible pages a look again. I loved those.
  • I kind of hated them tbh.

One of the things I agreed with the administration at large about with was that excessive positivity and negativity should've been kept off the main pages. The main problem was that the former was almost never enforced and the latter overly so.

  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
Yack Fest would be the giant robot's left pinky. Totally useless!
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
Yack Fest was the best actually. :3
