In a recent dream, I had the "brilliant" idea of color-coding signs for downtown freeway on-ramps. Ramps that led westbound would be red, and ramps that red eastbound would be blue.
Simple enough, right? Well, here's the thought process I used to arrive at it:
- The downtown onramps are, by definition, in the city's central business district.
- Because they're onramps and not off-ramps, anyone using the ramps would be doing so to leave the CBD.
- The time of day when most people will want to leave the CBD is late afternoon...around 5 p.m.
- The sun sets in the west, so at 5 p.m. the sun will be further to the west than the east.
- The sun is hot.
- Therefore, "west" should be denoted with a warm color and "east" should be denoted with a cool color.
...so yeah. It took me a while after I woke up to realize just how convoluted that was.
