The xkcd strip that most got to me was "Dark Flow", although it is one of the rare individual strips where you have to be semi-familiar with a character (in this case Beret Guy) to get the full impact, at least in my view.
On a very different note, the conclusion to smokes is just flat-out bleak. Also a pretty clever cinematic homage, now that I think about it.
^^ I did read one later part that... a character tells their story. That's how I'll put it, because then only people who have read it will get it. But yes, that was astonishingly sad.
