The protagonist is a very smart high-school student up against what amounts to an empire, Magical powers fall into his lap to help him achieve this goal, he has a sprawling duel with one of the characters on the otherside that lasts throughout the entire show. the protagonist isn't entirely morally justified in a lot of actions but is very "well-intentioned".
It deals with a lot of plotting and Inception plotting, but nothing that you feel is "too smart for it's own good"
It has all sorts of relatable female characters in it, One is an action girl, one is the moral ancor, one is partly the villain who can hold her own against the protagonist

I'm inclined to agree. Excellently put. I like Death Note, but Light as a character is practically completely unlikable by the end.
He hit the moral event horizon really quickly, though where's Lelouch worse offense was a mistake he was forced to roll with. He's easier to see as a commander that's had to make some hard decisions for his goals, where Light comes off as nothing short of a megalomaniac.
