  I was about to say Phil Spector had something to do with that, but Wikipedia says Gerry Goffin and Carole King produced the Little Eva version themselves.

  It probably had an influence on Phil's work though, at least indirectly, since a lot of British engineers and musicians were influence by the Soul & R&B records that were coming in Britain at the time. The were particularly interested in the drum sounds and getting a fat, rich bass sound like they achieved in those records, at least that what I've gathered from what I've read.
