Perhaps you could put some kind of mechanical limit on either how much EP that they can draw from their environment within a term or in general, or institute some other kind of limiting mechanism to prevent the whole "you are magically healed!" thing. There needs to be a balance between cost and gain, after all...

Healing works on people with bloodmana conditions (a generalized term for this sort of thing) but mana restoration does not.
