First off, Joy Division's "Disorder", a great rollicking song about chaos and depression wherein questionable guitar tuning actually makes things better.
Next, The Magnetic Fields' "100,000 Fireflies", which is basically the perfect dinky little pop song about being terrible for the person you love most. (This song has been known to make me cry.)
After that, The Olivia Tremor Control's "Another Set of Bees in the Museum", in which slow tape playback and strange tuning yield intriguing results.
And finally, something a touch harder-edged: Prurient's "Many Jewels Surround the Crown", otherwise known as "synth-pop from Hell."
