  I figured out one of the reasons why companies buy fonts is because it makes it much harder to create counterfeit products.
  
  Yugioh uses a variant of Matrix Small Caps, which makes any attempt at creating a counter-feit card extremely difficult.

  There are people who make cost-efficient clones or free-clones of popular fonts like that, for non-commercial use.
  
  Then there's people who make cost-effective clones of fonts so they can create convincing counterfeit products.
  
  I have a counterfeit Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End that was copied perfectly to the card, and the only way I could tell was because of the gloss on the card made it too "freshly printed".

  Generally it's all profit, making fake versions of expensive things for very cheap (or no money at all) is untaxable and generally unregulatable. Counterfeiting money is pure profit since you can use what you make with the supplies, to buy more supplies.

  There used to be entire collections of fonts from companies like SWFTE that were nothing but quick trace jobs of existing fonts. They look pretty naff in use, too. I actually have a copy of one of the SWFTE CDs from the mid-1990s at work, and it's pretty awful.

  Also, there was less malice involved with Arial's creation than most people (and that hatchet job of an article) believe. It was originally more-or-less a commission for IBM, who wanted a cheaper alternative to Helvetica for a laser printer they were developing.

  
  

  While I don't particularly like what companies like SWFTE did, I think I dislike font snobs even worse. There's one in Germany that goes on about it like a dA user complaining about "art theft".
