Let me tell you what bugs me of the human endeavor. I've never been the human in question, have you? Mankind went to the moon. I don't even know where Grimsby is. Forget progress by proxy. Land on your own moon. It's no longer about what they can achieve, out there on your behalf, but what we can experience up here and of our own time.
It's like, in a roundabout way, telling you to buy a PlayStation by telling you that you can "land on your own moon" and that other folks' achievements can't stop you from enjoying what you can do within your own mind.
I am honestly not that familiar with his work; what I have heard, I have liked or respected, but only infrequently loved. He does not strike me as a very emotionally dynamic musician, but his use of timbre can be interesting.
Aphex Twin is the poster boy of IDM, so it's not too surprising that a lot of his tracks are what I could best describe as "overly clinical". His music sounds cool, but it rarely seems to be even trying to make any sort of statement--political, emotional, hell even aesthetic.
Like Naney though I make an exception for the Selected Ambient Works series.
also his albums are generally aimlessly wandering shambles, and overall you get the impression that he's just not into it
also having listened to many musicians that fall under that nebulous "IDM" umbrella his work strikes me as the least interesting i have heard, a handful of rightfully obscure names notwithstanding.
Well, I suppose because his work is weird enough to be interesting, but not so much to be especially formidable. That and, again, his use of sounds can be pretty cool, particularly the use of hums and metallic timbres. There's also the nigh-universal respect for both Selected Ambient Works albums, especially 85-92.
But that's just the impression I get. I'm not familiar enough with his work to have the right to make sweeping judgements.
I like most of this Plug track but I feel the samples about "Acid House" are detrimental, and there's a part where everything but the drums cuts out and it just sounds barebones.
isn't Squarepusher the one who is also a jazz bassist.

^ I've been interested in cLOUDDEAD for a while, but heard nothing yet.
no time like the present.
cLOUDDEAD are on the very border of being "really weird hip-hop" and "really weird music that happens to involve a pair of people who are also rappers". I really wouldn't call them hip-hop like many do, but they're worth a listen anyway, if only for the fact that Doseone's solo material--vinetongued as it is--just isn't as good, Odd Nosdam's is impossible to find, and Yoniwolf's is barely worth a mention.
I've already heard very good things about cLOUDDEAD, but I think your recommendation/description just shot them even further up my list than they already were. Thanks, Lazuli!

That is extremely deep and chilling.
Or with a PlayStation.

The commercial was directed by the same guy who did Windowlicker for Aphex Twin.

Admittedly my experience with IDM is limited mostly to him, Clark (who is alright) and Autechre, who just confuse the shit outta me.
Do you have any recommendations for something a little warmer?

elsewhere in the realm of awesome music created via electronic means (but remember! This is hip-hop, call it electronica and I kill you :D)
because it's always time for DJ Shadow.
edit: I don't get why quoting you fucks with the plugin. You don't have anything weird in your name.
I kinda feel bad for DJ Shadow.
Everyone expects him to make some sort of genre-creating album like Endtroducing.... again, and I think he just wants to be a DJ at this point.
Like srsly.
not IDM but very good regardless.
Boards of Canada are nice.
Check out cLOUDDEAD if you haven't. Their self-titled debut is on Youtube.

also for something equally weird but more hip-hop by the same camp, Themselves' theFREEhoudini is almost as good.
Almost.
anticon. kinda stopped putting out good music recently. They sign people like Isaiah Toothtaker now v_v
here's the album if you can't find it anywhere
Actually I know about a fourth of those artists in that list up there^
