  It's kind of like Milton Babbit tossing major triads into his wonky total serialist quartets: It's jarring because you have inverted your expectations and flipping back is just weird.

  
  

  In Babbit, the effect is witty and absurd; in Penderecki, it's surreal and awe-inspiring.
