Essentially, Grenade Machineguns. They weigh in around 50 - 55 lbs, and their ammunition capacity is 30 grenades a clip. They can fire 4 grenades a second, and those grenades have a kill radius of up to five feet. They are amazingly efficient at destroying vehicles, buildings, and people.

Not only that, as of January 5th, 2013, it's legal for U.S Citizens to own them.

While people are bawwing about the M4 Carbine, I'll be shooting cans with this 50 pound death machine.

I haven't heard of many school shootings done with GMGs though, just semi-automatic/automatic/hunting rifles.

You know, vanilla ammunition. not explosive.

I also figured out that owners can purchase specially made 40mm Citric Acid-Based Hydrogen Dioxide Grenades for it. While not as deadly as 40mm Carbon Monoxide Sulfide Grenades, they can be made right at home from things you can find at Wal-Mart.

American gun laws can get kind of strange. Technically it's legal to own certain types of machine guns. Such as ones created before a certain date.

However they're pretty rare and rather expensive to shoot.

they're pretty neat I guess

and the fact that these are available to civilians is no big deal and I'll explain why. I live right next door to a gun shop that sold one of these a few months ago:

This is a Lahti L-39 anti-tank cannon. 20mm, semi-automatic (we're talking 1 round per second, easy) and the damage it can cause makes that auto grenade launcher look like a pop cap gun. The velocity alone is enough to turn a live human or animal target (other than an elephant) into instant pink mist. These things weapons aren't exactly common, but they're accessible along with ammo and it's quite easy for anyone who has enough money to purchase one. The main buyers, of course, are people suffering from a micropenis but that's beside the point. Since these things have been available in the United States (since the end of WWII), nobody has ever been killed or attacked or even threatened with one of these.

The Lahti isn't the only weapon sold and traded in the United States that can cause mass destruction. There's other military ordnance including and not limited to deathcannons like this and even fully auto weapons (which are fully functional) like Tommy Guns. The reason nobody raises a fuss about them is because statistically speaking, they're as harmless as a walk in the park. That's not to say that in the future some nut won't try to employ one, but almost every attempted murder and murder by gun is almost exclusively the domain of the handgun (which nobody is currently complaining about) and things like this and the auto grenade launcher that Viani posted are and pretty much always have been hovering around 0%.

Not to mention you can't discreetly carry any of these around. Same reason you're more likely (statistically speaking) to be killed with a knife than a sword. People don't tend to carry swords around because they're a tad hard to hide.

and really even then if you wanna go and kill like as many people as you can there are boatloads of more effective ways to do so

Dude, I get your point and all, but that's the exact same argument that a little kid makes when he does something dangerous: "Well, I've never gotten hurt before!" The fact that it can happen relatively easily is bad enough in its own right. Even if most of the people buying these things are dorky recluses that like to blow up busted old vans for fun or weird repressed guys compensating for their tiny wieners, the fact that a genuinely dangerous whackjob could get his hands on something like this even semi-legally is scary as all hell.

On the other hand, much smaller arms with expanded magazines are probably a far bigger threat to the public in the hands of a wannabe mass murderer, but given that the wilder stuff is perfectly legal, it's generally a given that these are, too.
