generally i think that a band being a one hit wonder whose one hit is a cover song indicates that the band has a hard time with composition and hook writing

Said cover of "Funkytown" (by a band called Pseudo-Echo) happens to also be painfully mediocre, so it's just really sad.

I have a soft spot for dumb 80s pop music.

Pseudo-Echo are some of the most painfully white people I have ever seen though.

Their albums from that period do sound like it; but their oeuvre as a whole is pretty diverse. I remember trying to explain to a friend of mine that only knew them from "Tubthumping" (and hated that song) that they started out as fellow travellers with Crass and Rudimentary Peni and he was utterly baffled.
