  They're both aesthetically unappealing and their names start with "G" and contain "lin"/"lins" in them. End of story.

  Gremlins seem to be considered something of an offshoot of Goblins in the sense that "Goblins" covers just about any small, mischievous creature. Given that the RAF coined "Gremlin", it's not unlikely that they based the idea off celtic goblin myths who are known for their mischief.
