Video Games rights activists have really pushed the bar haven't they?
Before, Video games like Pong and Space Invaders were all they had, and their rights were terrible, they couldn't even be accepted as Art, and that's terrible.
At the very least, they're on their way to becoming art.
It's interesting, really. Out of all the media that's available today, videogames are the most intrinsically related to commercialism. You can always find music without having to pay for it, and while most movie premieres aren't necessarily free, they can be subsidized in the name of art so as many people as possible can see it. With videogames, you have to either buy them or steal them (even with flash games, you usually have to sit through ads and whatnot to actually get to the game), and that's a wall preventing videogames from becoming art. Academia gets its rocks off to keeping true art and commercialism separate. It is their way.
The internet does allow for the dissemination of videogames freely without the need for financial compensation or law-breaking, so there's probably hope.
So, something is only recognized as art if it's recognized by a collective group of people?
That we defined what art is, and that video games as a media is capable of producing things that fall under the definiton isn't enough to qualify it as an art
But, what about when artists achieve recognition because of an industry?
The industry can work for the good of art, but they will always have different goals. Art thrives on innovation and creativity. While industry will occasionally use those traits, they're more interested in predictability and reliability. They key is to exploit the industry (as both a producer and a consumer) while it, in turn, exploits you. Well, that's one key. The others involve actively avoiding the industry to some degree.
