    Proof:

    1/3 = .333333333333333...
    2/3 = .666666666666666...
    3/3 = 1

There was a thread on TVT about this sometime last year

It was hilarious to watch the justifications some people would rather come up with than simply believe something slightly counterintuitive

Well a simple mathematical proof proves it

However, one of my math professors disputes this, and she's way beyond my petty knowledge of math; however I have other professors who disagree with her

    the ellipses indicate continuing forever.

Here, think about it like this: .9 is technically equal to .9000000...

If .999..... is less than one, that would mean that the difference between 1 and .999... would be .000...1000..., which would be two infinite amounts of zeroes in the same number. You could also say that because between any two numbers there are an infinite amount of other numbers, and because there is only one potential (nonexistent) number between .999... and 1, they are the same.

    Or this:

I'm gonna use this thread to point out that when I started university a few years ago, my math was so bad that I had to start back with 1+1 and 2+2

last semester I completed proofs and this semester I finished Calc 3, next semester I'll have my minor in Math obtained

math can be used to prove anything

    even false things

you realize there's a realm of mathematics where all of these oddities go, right

    it's called quantum physics

I've heard of it, sure. It's pretty trippy.
