Sometimes I think there's some psychological mechanism that people have that tells them to do things that they realize are extremely harmful, in such a way that they are made to consider the horrible consequences in great detail, which ends up being perhaps an even greater deterrent.
I think I've called this the imp of the perverse, but I think that that refers to cases where the person follows through with the foolish action instead of balking at the thought like what I'm talking about.
