James Rolfe (the AVGN guy) did something similar once, but with VHS tape--he took a stupid little clip of himself and copied it from tape to tape until it became unwatchable.
It kind of reminds me of John Cage's avant-garde stuff. He does the same "eliminating humanity from a piece of media" thing in 4'33. If the original film was something artistic in itself, like a piece of music or a film, I might go as far as to call it art.
Also, his voice gets cool before it becomes unintelligible
