I've seen hail storms with pea-sized hail a couple times in Ohio. Got caught on top of a mountain called Calamity Point in Idaho as a thunderstorm rolled through once, and there was pea-sized hail. Also one morning at a picnic area in Yellowstone there was hail piled up in the shade, probably from a hailstorm overnight. It must have looked like a blanket of snow before the sun melted most of it.
