I think the demographics of bronies correspond pretty closely to those of nerdy internet shit in general. That is, the majority are male, and a majority of the males are straight, but the proportion of other orientations is higher than what you find IRL.
Also, some people external to the community define "brony" as an exclusively male term. I believe the generally accepted use is ungendered, but it is pretty obvious that the etymology of the word comes from a word to describe only males.
To be honest, the majority of non-IJBM2/TVT Bronies I've met are just a more loud and insecure breed of DAfurry.
Gelzo, forzare and others are actually enjoying the fun-ness of the fandom, while a high majority of them elsewhere are evolving it into some fucked-up lifestyle/culture thing like a high majority of the DAfurries.
I mean, MLP is a show for little girls. A brony is a teenage or adult male who thinks the show is funny and likes to evoke reactions of confusion from people and enjoy strings of awesomeness with other fans, and generally use Ponies as a method of communication via memes, videos and media. That's it.
Don't wish you were a pony, don't "clop", don't declare any of the ponies your "mare", and don't put on horse masks and write letters to Celestia. I mean...FGSFDS
In that case I guess we can blame it all on IJBM and the Fanfiction thread. :p
Actually, to be fair, there have been a few pony OCs and "if you were a pony, which one would you be" quizzes in the YF thread, and I'm pretty sure the WA thread never derailed into a discussion of transmares, so I guess the YF thread is probably the weirder one.

I've brought up an allegory for transgenderism in the WA one, though I assume most of its participants are cisgendered males who don't really touch YF and as such wouldn't really care.

Nothing's really wrong with OCs, but a lot of them do seem a little "what if you were a pony?", which I assumed Tnoph was referring to when she talked about people wishing they were ponies.
To be fair, she did specify "wishing you were a pony". I don't see anything wrong with that, but I can see how it would get annoying if mentioned constantly.
