The death of background noise media

What becomes of it as linear television declines and "who gives a shit TV" dies off?

probably people will just put music on in the background i guess

youtube has autoplay if you're that desperate to have someone wittering on and not listen to it
  • Let's Plays are the modern equivalent.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
mostly i meant like mediocre scripted shows and movies

or the kinds of shows that NBC stuffed on between Friends and Seinfeld on Thursday nights that would promptly wither and die when the network put them anywhere else on the lineup (usually because they were awful)

as for Let's Plays, how many of them are good? because, like, can any other Sonic LPer live up to pokecapn and his posse? Where are they now anyway

I know some of the humor in their legendary Sonic '06 LP hasn't held up too well tho
  • Munch munch, chomp chomp...

What's it matter? You've literally brought up "who gives a shit" and "mediocre" media, quality is irrelevant to the question here.

I prefer to watch Let's Plays, not have them blaring on a TV as wallpaper
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
I think the usual background noise in the Netflix era is to just put on something you've already seen
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
TV as wallpaper is something I deeply, deeply hate

So let it die. Let it die ASAP

    what makes you hate it

    your usual issues with TV?
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Why does anyone need background noise? It's intensely annoying. I don't get it

    same

also like, in our house growing up, TV was rarely on, and only ever because someone was actively watching something they wanted to watch.  the upshot is i can't just tune it out.  it's not wallpaper for me, it's intensely distracting.

in the crew room at work, someone always puts the TV on, and it's always something like Jeremy Kyle, or some awful comedy like Baby Daddy or Two Broke Girls, and they don't even watch it.  it's the most irritating thing.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    I just don't get it.

If you're not going to actively watch something, why not just have silence? Silence is nice.

Sometimes mum puts on some crappy crime drama on TV when she’s doing mind numbingly boring tasks like ironing or marking papers. It stops her from going insane, apparently.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Why are you even remotely concerned about this?
  • I mean there's something to be said about the innate value of any specific form of media, I just wish she was running that angle a bit better.

yeah it's basically more misplaced nostalgia for a time before 9/11

But, like, you said this stuff was lousy. Sure, some people like to use media as background noise, but like Brian Eno said of ambient music, shouldn't it be interesting when paid attention to as well as it works as aesthetic furniture? Why this nostalgie de la boue - a longing for something which always sucked?

By the by, this kind of television still exists, as my many visits to doctors and dentists attest, and it is so, so lame.

    It is lame yes

I have no idea why I have it but I just kinda do

Also, boss aesthetic furniture - huck/quick draw/yogi come to mind

    Basically this.

I don't mind music in the background, though it should obviously be at low enough a volume that it is unobtrustive.

TV in the background, on the other hand, is basically an attention sink, and frequently something I don't want to pay attention to when I have other stuff to think about, which is all the time.
