    If anything, I feel like internet AFD pranks have gotten less elaborate over the years.

    Like, this year, Google did the Where's Waldo thing on Google Maps, which is admittedly pretty elaborate, but that's more of a "cute game" and less of a "prank" in any sense of the word.
