The popularity of cartoons

I keep reading Comic Vine threads about the popularity of DC and Marvel and I notice people rarely discuss the animated adaptations of their comics, instead focusing on live-action movies.

Are cartoons less popular than it feels to me?

    I think part of it is just that there haven't been as many animated adaptations of DC/Marvel properties lately compared to live-action films.

    which might seem to indicate less interest (or, at least, less perceived interest) in animation?
