Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
I Read That As:
The only game show where the #1 rule of friendship is to beat the ever-loving crap out of people!
Now I'm imagining it in a cheesy announcer voice. "And now, here's the host of Pokémon, Samuel Oak!"
It honestly kind of annoys me when people try to apply ethics to Pokemon (and the storyline was one of the few things that annoyed me about B/W to an extent because of this).
Sure, it would be horrible if it was real, but it's not, so I'm just not sure why it matters so much.
Part of it, of course, is the fact that grimdarkification seems to be the Pokemon fandom's favorite hobby, but whatever.
Pokemon's fanbase has been skewing older for awhile now (though not entirely by any means), which makes it kind of sad to me that they'd pander to that. Call me immature if you want, but Pokemon is one of a handful of franchises from my childhood that I still get a lot of childlike joy out of, I would rather that not be ruined, but apparently that's an unpopular opinion.
I liked B/W's Pokemon, heroes, etc. and it did ultimately have a mostly happy ending. But that they felt to even "go there" at all is depressing to me.

Assassin poems, Poems that shoot
guns. Poems that wrestle cops into alleys
and take their weapons leaving them dead
I liked the Super Mario Bros. Movie.
So you can burn me at the stake if you want, but I've spoken my peace.

But, neither of those necessarily qualifies it as a bad movie.
