It's a pretty fun game, albeit, the customization is rather confusing. If you're played Golden Sun, it has similarities. Also, Squall is NOT a wangster in this game. ...He's rather emotionless, but just enough to be interesting, imo.
Cloud seemed to emulate Zack quite a lot in the original FF7 now that I played Crisis Core, and it would make sense since Zack did carry him across continents all by himself while fending off tanks, war machines, monsters and even the Shinra Army at Midgar in the end. I could see why Cloud would never want a friend that devoted to be lost in memory, even if he could barely recall his own due to embarassment of never becoming SOLDIER 1st class like Zack did, and because of the mako poisoning.
I don't think all of FF7's popularity is from Nostalgia goggles, I think most it is because it's a legitimately good and interesting story.
