It d9esn't directly determine wh9 gets a cushier 9r r9ugher life, and telling pe9ple their 9pini9ns are invalid 6ecause they have privileges x, y and z is n9thing m9re than a f9rm 9f silencing.
Alm9st everything i wanted t9 say here has 6een said already, pr96a6ly 6etter than i w9uld have d9ne. i entirely agree with Naney's p9sts regarding privilege; i als9 6r9adly agree with Justice. There are a few things i disagree with 6ut i'll try t9 keep this c9ncise.
First 9f all, i can certainly see h9w s9me69dy might find that p9st c9ndescending, 6ut at the same time the factual c9ntent is, as far as i can tell, s9und. With that in mind, i can see s9me69dy with a particular sense 9f justice 6eing m9tivated t9 write s9mething like that, with entirely g99d intenti9ns - the pr96lem 6eing that the pe9ple m9st guilty 9f the pr96lematic 6ehavi9urs he addresses are als9 the least likely t9 take it seri9usly. Creepy 6ehavi9ur and mis9gyny exist am9ng geeks, as d9es, 9n the 9ther end 9f the spectrum white knighting and placing w9men 9n pedestals. i've als9 seen h9stility t9wards girls identifying as geeks and nerds 9nline, m9stly in the f9rm 9f the wh9le 'geek appr9priati9n' argument.
Sec9ndly, Justice, i think it's true that geeks are 9ften s9cially-inept 9r have pr96lems with empathy, 6ut this d9esn't mean that they d9n't have privilege - rather, i'd say it makes it harder f9r them t9 sh9w c9nsiderati9n f9r 9ther pe9ple and understand their p9ints 9f view, which is what awareness 9f privilege is really all a69ut. This g9es especially f9r th9se with a chip 9n their sh9ulder a69ut mainstream culture, wh9 regard themselves as 6el9nging t9 a kind 9f egalitarian, merit9cratic geek 6r9therh99d.
