    :P

My favorite version of Robotnik(not Eggman, to be clear) is definitely Sonic Underground. He was honestly such a horrifying villain. Sure, it was a remake of his SatAM self, but dammmnnnn...!

As for Eggman, it's a tough one. I admit his Sonic X version was an extremely varied character that wasn't just some truly evil man. He had a heart and was a good overall character, IMO.

    He has.

However, Eggman and Robotnik were treated quite differently even in design.

Eggman's first english appearance is in Sonic Adventure.

To me, Robotnik is beyond extreme and for the most part, is heartless. Eggman is the opposite. He's dark, but does have quite a heart. He'll help out the hero if it fits him. Robotnik... is always the bad guy. Note that while in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog he once in a blue moon help out Sonic, he was a more comedic version as is. He wasn't treated as a dark person in general, but was still quite extreme. But the show couldn't go as dark as the other two. Sonic X was another story, of course.

Funny thing is that Eggman is a robot in the original Sonic comics. Alongside Egg Robo

    >I believe Robotnik always *has* been called Eggman in Japan.

Yup. :)  But Robotnik is his "real" surname, even in Japan!

This is kind of true, he wasn't such a bad guy in Heroes or Shadow, but he was pretty brutal in SA2 even though he was a playable character.

Maybe it's cuz I didn't really watch the cartoons (apart from Sonic Underground, like, so long ago I can't even remember what it was about) but I still think of him as the same guy in all the games.

I'm a loser. Also, Creeper. And a woman.
It's actually Dr. Ivo Robotnik Eggman.

Robotnik and Eggman are both parts of their name.

Also, Dr. Robotnik has been used strictly for Gerald to keep them separate.

Of course, that does not mean that the original Robotnik was Gerald, although that could make sense. :P But seriously, doubt it.

^ Yeah. That's why I like them all. They're all cool in their own way. Ironically, I prefer the X and Adventures(cartoon) version of Robotnik/Eggman. They weren't really flat. Also, wait, are you a Sonic Underground fan? :D

Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.  Eggman is just a nickname.

Gerald Robotnik is usually called by his full name, isn't he?

^ I was an Underground fan when I was little but I don't really remember anything about it apart from the theme song and the names of the main characters, sorry.

He's also called Gerald. Or "My grandfather".

What's funny is that he created Shadow. Shadow is, by default, Eggman and Maria's Uncle.

So is Biolizard. Biolizard is technically his brother/sister(whatever gender it is).

The Robotniks are quite an f-ed up family, eh? Also, he's a Great Uncle to all of Robotnik's creations. Yes, he's a Great Uncle to Omega! As well as Gamma and Chaos Gamma.

^ Ah. I loved the series. It played during the same years as Samurai Pizza Cats. XD

    Plus, the theme rocked.

Animation was good, and Sonia was like a variation of Amy, while Manic was clearly a dark version of Tails.

I just wish they finished translating it. I also enjoyed the multiple themes. Dingo and the other guy really felt like a Scratch Grounder, but it did have competence as a notable thing, and not just two idiots.

  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Dr. Robotnik could be callous in the older games, too (see Oil Ocean Zone in Sonic 2, which the American manual at least says had the eponymous ocean severely polluted by the oil refineries, the Bad Futures in Sonic CD, and his robot firebombing Angel Island Zone in Sonic 3 simply to kill Sonic and Tails).
  • I'm a loser. Also, Creeper. And a woman.
That's why I said Robotnik was downright evil, heh.

I consider Eggman more like Lawful Evil. He's not pure evil, I would say. He does good things. Note that he never uses the term "kill Sonic" but "destroy Sonic". It's more "defeat the hero" than kill them outright. I don't know if his Sonic X version is fairly accurate to his appearances from Sonic Adventure onwards, but he does not believe killing is a good solution. He especially does not condone killing children(but hurting/incapacitating them is a-okay!). ...Although in the third season, he was against people hurting Chris. My opinion is that he had a soft spot for him instead.

Now, to be fair, if the hero is almost always invincible, like say, He-Man, killing them makes sense in context. But otherwise...

He never attempted to destroy all of Earth. He attempted to send them in fear so they'd go under his rule.

As for the island blowing up, to what he knew, it was full of pure robots and almost no soldiers. Collateral damage at best. In addition, soldiers are against him, fighting them... is not out of question. He IS a terrorist, after all.

^^ I think he was going to just hold the Earth to ransom, but yeah, that.  That was also the game where he threatened Tails with a handgun and "killed" Sonic in front of him (except Sonic escaped, obviously).

And no, Prison Island was inhabited.  We heard the soldiers talking, and some of the GUN robots are manned, like the one Shadow fights at the start.

He also attempted to destroy a major city in Sonic Adventure.
  • I'm a loser. Also, Creeper. And a woman.
I have a feeling that Eggman knew Sonic could escape. In fact, think of the events that happen.

First, the dark story clearly was canon, since in order for the Last Story to happen, all 7 Emeralds need to be placed in.(to release Biolizard)

Next, Eggman was probably counting on Sonic to escape since he's more than intelligent enough to know something bad could happen. Likewise, remember, he was sad that Sonic died. His tone of voice showed that. One thing to note is that he called him "worthy adversary". So I believe that it was a last resort and not a "must kill him always" situation.

    Nobody said he wasn't mean.

We said he wasn't a monster. Key difference. He's a bad guy, alright, but he is no Monster. He wouldn't have helped saved the world or acted as a good guy more than once if that were the case. Evil, yes. Monster, totally not.

Remember, he was a hero in Sonic Adventure 2(after a while), did some good in Sonic Adventure 1 and Sonic 2006. He was also a pure hero in Heroes(how ironic), mostly a hero in Shadow, and finally is a hero most of the time in Sonic Chronicles.

"Monster" is a matter of opinion.  There's not like an objective standard for that kind of thing.

He is a very unpleasant man.  I think we can agree on that?

My definition of monster is they can't have redeemable traits or have done anything good.

Eggman doesn't fit the case, truthfully.

    Yay! Robotnik derail!

He seemed pretty evil in the comics, from what I watched.

Like many villains, though. His plans where often too complex for their own good.

I think this might help explain why Megatron kept Starscream around. Though, Starscream was short sited, he probably shoot down some of Megatron's more ridiculously contrived plans...which is pretty damn scary when you think about it.

Starscream in every season has always been a betrayer. It's his character.

As for Robotnik/Eggman, yeah, he can be scarey as hell in just about every instance he has characterization.

Adventures of STH is the only one I'd say was pretty much too comedic and not scary at all. IMO.

Also, Sonic Generations has Eggman refer to his younger self(which is the version up to... before Sonic Adventure?) as Robotnik, so it's even possible Sega shares my view on them being treated separately characterization-wise.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
They treat Classic and Modern Sonic as different characters, though, when the biggest difference there was the art style.

Also, I rewatched the SA2 scene where Eggman seemingly kills Sonic and he sounds pretty gleeful.  Maybe he really respected Sonic as an enemy, but he sure doesn't seem remorseful for killing him.  He's enjoying himself.
