You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
It's a tie between several different books: Peace by Gene Wolfe, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, Songs of a Dead Dreamer by Thomas Ligotti, Tainaron: Mail from Another City by Leena Krohn, and Burning Your Boats by Angela Carter are all contenders in their own rights; likewise, Tainaron is included within Ann and Jeff VanderMeer's gigantic anthology The Weird, and I feel that one deserves a mention for sheer ambition at a minimum. Peace might be the deepest, though. I have read it maybe twice and still, it haunts and bedevils me
As for authors: Elizabeth Hand, Joel Lane, Stepan Chapman, Steve Rasnic Tem, Michael Cisco, Harlan Ellison, Ramsey Campbell, and Robert Aickman are all worth a nod or more, although citing particular collections or novels is difficult either because I have read too little of them or their best work is scattered or all of it is too strong to rank effectively. That said... go read "Wonderwall", "The Window", "The Revenge of the Calico Cat", "In These Final Days of Sales", "The Genius of Assassins", "The Deathbird", "The Voice of the Beach" and "Niemandswasser" respectively.
I don't know if I have a real favorite (it's been a while since I was able to just read for the hell of it), but if I had to say something, I'd probably say Little Brother by Cory Doctorow.
Can I talk comics here too? Because I do have a favorite series of graphic novels; you can probably guess it given that it's become shorthand for "basic animesque Western art style." (Entry level status be damned, it's still close to my heart as ever.) I also really enjoyed Scud, enough so that it's gotten itself a nice second-place spot.
