  Not sure how networks die, I guess they get consumed by another channel, get rebranded and have their lineups assimilated, not sure.

  TNN, IIRC, was a victim of one of CBS's several mergers and was eventually considered redundant, so they changed it from a country-music channel to a general-interest channel. TechTV was just plain abused and didn't deserve the fate it got.

  Westinghouse/CBS bought TNN (then called The Nashville Network) from Gaylord in 1997 (though Westinghouse already owned a piece of it) along with Country Music Television. Westinghouse later became the CBS Corporation, and in 2000, it sold itself to Viacom. Viacom folded TNN and CMT into MTV Networks, who decided that they had too much in common, and also wanted their own version of TBS or USA. They solved this problem by turning TNN into The National Network, which also existed in large part as an outlet for Viacom to exploit shows it owned the rights to. (For one thing, it "bought" the syndication rights to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation from CBS)

  Then The National Network petered out and turned into Spike TV, the "first network for men." Now it's slated to be turned into The Paramount Network next year - a revival of the National Network concept, in a sense.

  I remember being real confused as a kid when I found out that the T in TNN didn't stand for Turner like it did in TBS and TNT

  I think Turner actually threatened legal action over a TNN logo that had the "T" connect to the "N," saying it too closely resembled the TNT logo of the time. So TNN just redesigned that logo and separated the two letters, and would use that one until the National Network relaunch

  It took six years, but Cartoon Network got their revenge for that.
