BUT WHAT'S THIS?!?!?!

Metroid Prime
A prequel where the Metroids aren't the focus at all. Instead, through exploration of the ruins of a long dead empire that spread throughout the galaxy via total mastery of bio-mechanical engineering we piece together both the beliefs of their kind as well as the cause of their downfall. The game ends with a gratuitous appearance of a more primal "Metroid."
