Trap can actually refer to several different things, but usually people are talking about either;
Trap Music (sometimes spelled Trap Muzik), which is a subgenre of hip-hop pioneered by people like Gucci Mane and Jeezy. The instrumentals tend to have a hard, synthetic sort of feel, with lots of synths and programmed drumlines, and the subject matter tends to be about selling drugs (also called "trapping", from whence the genre gets its name) or using them. Migos are probably the biggest "pure" trap rappers right now, but the subgenre's influence is felt in a lot of places both inside and outside hip-hop.
EDM Trap is a different genre and falls under the bigger tent of "electronic music". It's inspired by the above, here you're basically talking about the group TNGHT and the many, many people who they influenced.
Alright. A person I was hanging out with was talking about Trap Music and I asked if it was like Hip Hop and he said "No they're not even related" so I got confused because they have similar sounds.
