Is it just me or do what the parents name the Ponies often have a great deal to do with how their lives turn out?

Or maybe the ponies tend to change there names later, or pick up a nick-name? Like Pinkie?

I'm not trying to be pedantic, but I don't understand this.

I don't think there are typically name changes. I figure the correlation between name and personality has to do with some sort of cross-section between cultural influence and destiny.

@topic: I think that a lot of it has to do with last names, such as how there is the "apple" family. Way back yonder, last names were chosen according to profession. Children tend to share jobs with their elders, and thus will have special talents that appear to be very similar.

Further, Equestria could be like Japan, in that pponies refer to others primarily on a last name basis, explaining why many ponies seem to have only "one" name.
