I have a copy of HOI4 that doesn't work with the current stuff I have installed on my laptop and I read somewhere that installing a new graphics driver might fix the issue, and I even have said driver downloaded, but I don't know anything about installing such things and I'm afraid of bricking my laptop.

if I can't get it running it's not the hugest deal I suppose, it would just help right now is all.

Graphics drivers don't really brick your laptop. I've heard of bad drivers causing bluescreens and whatnot, but it's easy enough to roll back to the previous driver if that happens.

Also: Windows has generic drivers that can run your display at a low resolution, so you don't have to worry about uninstalling your graphics driver and being unable to use the display.

It's been a while, but I think it was the same way it is in 10, so: Control Panel -> System -> System Protection

Did you download the driver from Intel.com? If you did, that's normal.

Try looking on Dell's website.

- If you have a laptop with Intel integrated chipset, the auto updater seems to not have the latest drivers. People went to intel's website and downloaded the latest version manually.

Usually that means you tried to install the wrong driver for the graphics chipset you have.

mm, I'm finding this really confusing.

I have an Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 on this thing

is that like a really weird, niche set or something? I just can't seem to find the right drivers. Everything is either for Windows 7 instead of 8, or is just for the "Intel HD Graphics 4000" (no R) thing.

I've tried installing a couple now, they all cough up errors.

Like, every topic on this I can find is "ooh yeah I just updated the drivers" but the automatic updater utility didn't do anything when I tried it, and I can't find anyone else who's having the same issues I am with finding the right drivers.

Everything I can find tells me to go here, but these (the 64x ones anyway, maybe I should try a 32x one? That seems incorrect though) cough up this error

The (R) doesn't mean anything. It's just their lazy way of writing a ® symbol.

I hate to say this, but it may be the case that Intel dropped support for Windows 8.0 and only keeps up-to-date drivers for Windows 8.1.

You can roll back a Windows 8.1 installation to a Windows 8.0 installation if necessary, yes.

Windows 10 is still available for free but you'd have to go to 8.1 to install it anyways so you might as well start with that.
