Heh. I drive a 1991 Mercury, so those are actually the exact blanks my keys are cut from.

The squarish key unlocks the doors and operates the ignition.
The round key unlocks the trunk and the glove compartment.
it's so that you can give one to the valet and they can't open your glove compartment and steal all your stuff but can drive your car to the parking lot several blocks away
seeing a car key that's not got the black thing around it is also really weird
I usually make my spare car keys the non-black ones, since the flat ones are dirt cheap and I mostly just want them around in case I lock my key in my car.

Fun anecdote: while in Westerville a few weeks ago I locked my keys in the car...and it was my only set of keys, so instead of just having somebody bring me a spare key, I had to call the police and ask an officer to break into my car for me.
After that, I went to Sears and had a spare key made.

I think for some more recent cars you have to have the black ones because there's electronics in it instead of just a plain key. It's meant as an anti-theft thing.
It gets weirder with newer cars, especially ones with push-to-start. You typically have a metal key inside the fob in case either the fob battery of the car battery dies, and the fob usually has an NFC-ish transponder in it that will let you start the car if the fob battery is dead.
