I hate the way Firefox and Chrome display images

With the gray background and, in Chrome's case at least, the "transparency" background on transparent images.

Why? What was wrong with the white background?

I feel like, in Chrome's case especially, the "transparency" background defeats the purpose of having a grey background to begin with.
