In my opinion, the winner of a football game should be the team that is in the lead for the most minutes.
I think the same should apply to races, although a race makes sense, as the winner is the person of the greatest average speed.
But, as a football game is about getting more points, as opposed to getting to a certain number of points first, it's (in the distorted logic of my gut feelings), about outdoing the other team, and thus, the team that most frequently was outdoing the other team should win.
