  "Ars longa, vita brevis" comes from a latin translation of a greek proverb used by doctors
  

  
  

  Of course in their version the word translated as "ars" is "tekne" which more precisely means a craft or a skill, rather than an artform.

  
  What was meant by the proverb is that medicine is a complicated and difficult craft, and no one can learn it all in one lifetime.
