Dubstep is a genre of electronic music characterised by shuffle-y syncopation, Half-Time beats, and deep bass. A lot of it has a melancholy, muffled feel.

It started off in 2000 with this duo called Horsepower Productions, and by about 2005 it had become one of the cornerstones in the UK Underground, with proponents like Vex'd.
Then in 2007 a Canadian producer named Excision listened to Vex'd and thought it would be a good idea to fuse their style with Electro House....
And then that exploded into one of the biggest things in Electronic Music since a London graffiti artist named Clifford Price and his cohorts thought of fusing reggae, Hip-Hop, and Breakbeat Hardcore....
I never heard of it's existence until this year, sadly enough, mostly because of everyone going Skrillex Dubstep WAH WAH 25Mhz needs a better drop etc.
I knew about dubstep a little before it started to get really popular, but only because I was listening to a lot of speedcore and some dubstep seeped in.
