The animation and designs for this iteration of the show are really expressive and pretty. I would be just so hype for this were I a child, and I'm still more than mildly intrigued as an adult despite my knowledge that I'm not much of a monster-of-the-week guy.

It's legitimately super good and I keep trying to make a group-watch happen but it's noooooot. Like, it's beyond season 17 for me (except I haven't seen the high points for it either yet), and is just so expressively exuberant. The redesigns work fantastically with how fluid and wacky they can get.

Also I'm way behind on funny face screenshots, but man, they're great.

The original series started airing in the US when I was little and I was super into it for a while but this just looks so much better.

Also, as noted, one of the more recent seasons has a very prominent Sylveon kicking all sorts of tail, and as we all know, Sylveon is mai waifu my secret magical girl identity the best.

I've been putting off XY, the series you're referencing (season 17), because I'm not as big on the English dub even if it's serviceable and, well, at the very least last season was pretty stacked. This seems better for me overall planning...
