Movie trilogies vs cinematic universes

Which do you like more? Which has been more successful? Which offers a better platform for writers with a long term or cohesive vision?
Star Wars Trilogy and Lord of the Rings or MCU and DCEU, for instance.

Gotta go with trilogies, as of now. I have enjoyed some cinematic universes, but the form hasn't been perfected like the trilogy has been.
I have high hopes for someone in the future to make a perfect Brandon Sanderson Cinematic Universe.
At their best, the trilogy tells one story in three parts, where a cinematic universe is more episodic, more breadth and less depth.
