I hate that "I can treat you better than he can" song

That's the shit self-proclaimed "nice guys" say to women they think owe them sex. It's not cute, it's not endearing, and I don't wanna hear it anymore.

  • ok ive never heard this song, so what im about to say may not relate to this song in specific but "i am of the opinion that I would be a better partner than the one you have right now, so i am disappointed in your choice", while generally associated with more objectionable sentiments, is in and of itself a natural, (sometimes) reasonable and understandable feeling to have.

what if it were a girl singing it to a guy i.e. "I can treat you better than she can"

    Munch munch, chomp chomp...
    Fair.

Personally I'm just tired of hearing cloying songs of that ilk so much, like I am with certain types of saccharine and weirdly unromantic romance songs (as some of Ed Sheeran's songs have sounded to me, though there are others).

I'd also like more relatable and less vaguely discomforting romance songs on the radio, but that's another subject.

^ Can't remember the last time I ended up listening to a song like that, though my sentiments would be the same.

then it'd be a Taylor Swift song
  • bdsm acoustic white dude ballad when

I think there should be more songs about cuckoo clocks
  • Splat Charger Specialist
I read that as: "Cuckold definitely-not-clocks"

    that's avril lavigne's "girlfriend"
  • For once, or maybe twice, I was in my prime.

I swear there was some country radio hit that also covered that same theme, named something along the lines of "Baby I Can Love You Better". I wanna say it was by the Dixie Chicks, but I'm not sure.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Taylor Swift, as Jane notes, mined the same terrain on several of her biggest hits.

Also, I agree with the beau insofar as I think the sentiment in itself is not necessarily a bad one, or a recipe for a bad song—hell, Airs' "White Rose" is this with a really bitter edge, and it's one of my favourite quasi-pop songs—but I do think that Centie has a point when she points out that it tends to have this air of nasty entitlement.

Swift is funny to me, in that I really like her delivery, aesthetics and persona over the year, and her voice, but unfortunately trends towards stuff I really really don't care for. I'd personally like more "Blank Space"-like songs, for example.

And, seconding Vash's comment, though in the end it ends up as "Gee what I largely hear comes off as whiny," so I don't think about it much. Not like my sentiment would change that much either if I listened to more music.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
A few of her recent songs have been significantly more lyrically interesting, but less musically consistent. I don't have a lot of Strong Taylor Swift Opinions, though, so take that as you will.
  • fight. dream. horse. love.
I just listened to "I Can't Help But Wait" and "Let Me Love You" again because of this thread and wow, those are a lot scummier than I remember
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I haven't seen the video for this song but I heard it portrays her current partner as a domestic abuser, which makes the song a little less skeevy

It's still pretty bad devoid of context though, and his delivery doesn't help.

I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
This song is playing in Del Taco right now
  • i don't have much of any opinion of taylor swift

i don't like avril lavigne's "girlfriend" but i do like her "complicated"
  • ok but what do you think of her "Hazard To Myself"

trick question that song is by P!nk. I know this because an angry P!nk fan once told me so on twitter.
  • I don't know what's more sad: the fact that angry P!nk fans are a thing, or the fact that she's been putting out the same song to radio for the past five years and they're still playing it.
  • While I agree with the essential sentiment of this thread, being in competition for partnership is an experience parsed by the gut moreso than rational thought. The (kind of abstract and semi-hypothetical) conflict feels much bigger than it really is
